Lake James NC - A Haven For Outdoor Lovers

Lake James NC offers tons of water sports and activities but also offers lots of other outdoor fun. The Lake James region is full of opportunities for hiking. From the leisurely stroller to the strenuous mountain climbing enthusiast – plenty of opportunities around the area can keep you occupied for months.

A network of trails runs through our 1780 and Old Wildlife Club communities. Trails in 1780 connect residents to Camp Lake James and Lake James State Park. A portion of the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail also runs through 1780, and will eventually connect to the Mountains to the Sea Trail, allowing hikers to travel the entire width of North Carolina.

Lake James State Park, bordering much of our 1780 community, features several hiking trails, a swimming area, fishing and picnicking. For the more seasoned hiker, the Linville Gorge Wilderness Area and the Pisgah National Forest offer miles of challenging hiking. Other options include more than 40 miles of trails in nearby South Mountains State Park and Mount Mitchell State Park, a 1,855-acre park approximately 56 miles from Lake James, offering horseback riding trails in addition to hiking and camping amenities.

Cyclists flock to western North Carolina for its scenic roads and strenuous off-road courses that take advantage of the area terrain.

Linville Gorge offers three different mountain-biking trails, ranging from an easy, eight-mile ride to the Linville Gorge Loop, which is an advanced 49-mile trail. South Mountains State Park features a challenging 18-mile bike loop. Cyclists are also welcome along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Nearby Asheville is a rock climber’s delight with multiple opportunities to scale cliffs and a strong community of rock-climbing enthusiasts. A key spot is Chimney Rock Park, 25 miles south of Asheville and convenient to Lake James.

1780 is defined by its inspiring views and ties to the area’s rich American history. It is just a short hike or paddle from 1780 to Camp Lake James, Crescent’s new lake adventure center. And, the 3,000-acre expansion of Lake James State Park is just across the street.
